As far as the future of UnixWare, this seems fine. SCO has just annouced that Oracle8 will be supported. SCO is combining their SCO OpenServer and UnixWare into a single product - Code-named "Gemini", available by the end of the year. UnixWare is the more advanced of the two Unixes and Gemini will be more UnixWare than OpenServer. > I had heard great things about UnixWare, only to find it went off with > a dull thud in the marketplace. How does it compare to Linux? Novell had difficulty marketing it. Now that SCO owns it, it will be the base of their new OS, so as long as SCO is around "Unixware" will be there. How well it does is closely tied to how well SCO does. SCO claims to be the largest Unix vendor. :) I don't know how it compares with Linux, but in reviews against other Intel-based Unixes such as SCO OpenServer, and Solaris, UnixWare came out very favorably. The reviews I paid the most attention to are the "Unix Review" comparisons, since they know Unix. And PC Week stated that UnixWare was as easy as NT to administer, which, coming from a MS-centric publication, is high praise indeed. Personally, I like it. As a testament to it's robustness, on a client's Online configuration, which I was called in to troubleshoot, the previous administrators had Online set up to grab 132MB of memory at startup. This is pretty bad, considering that the system only had 96MB of actual memory. Online didn't run well at all, but I was amazed that Unixware didn't crash given that Online was trying to grab all the RAM-plus. They had been running for months like this. I couldn't believe that the system didn't just crash as soon as Online started... -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Blah Blah Lounge - "Do You Have Something Smart To Say?"
