Using C with Informix-online

I have been developing a MS-Access front end for an Informix-Online 5.01 production database. On top of the Informix dBase, we have proprietery software written in ESQL/C, running through a run time version. I have basically by passed the single user proprietery software and made client/server using ODBC drivers. Everything works fine, except I am supposed to get data from numerous bar code readers into the Informix dBase. I have set up ports on my SCO UNIX box for getting ASCII data. I am confused as to how this information is going to get into the Informix tables. The only developing tools I have on the UNIX box are DBAccess and C. I am not too excited about writing code in C, is there a good book that will examplify database operations in C? I don't think we can afford ESQL/C or anything that fancy. I would greatly appreciate help on this. Mainly suggestions on getting my data into existing Informix tables.
