If I am not competent enough to use dd, then it is my own problem. If I using a hot swappable disk array, and I end up getting an I/O error when swapping out the drives, I do not expect informix to support that either. It is transparent to informix, so why involve them? Doesn't mean I won't let drives be hot swapped on my system, or that swapping the drives hot is unsupported.
