Possibly your statements are based on a lack of knowledge about who Mike is, and what's transpired up to now. Please stop by my site for a bit more background if you haven't already. And of course, ask Mike what his role is with the IIUG. I think you'll find that he's got more going on than just wanting email addresses. Informix wants the damnable business case, because they just don't understand the marketplace. This is not a bad thing, Informix has put a lot of focus on a really great product, now they are turning to outside leadership for marketing information and direction. The survey he refers to is an attempt by Mike, and probably myself to a degree to guide people interested in Informix-on-Linux to a survey that we will hope be of benefit to Informix. We have contacted the people at Data Design and will obtain the results of the information. It's my understanding the best method to validate survey information is to get a valid email address, otherwise the results could be tainted, and not possible to audit. The retail coupon industry works in a similar fashion, requiring an audit. It is extremely hard to quantify the extremely elusive and eclectic Linux community. My own conversations with people at the top at Red Hat have told me even *they* have a hard time trying to figure out the Linux market. The surveys we've seen to date are interesting. There are also arguments that Linux should stay in the realm of a free-ware-only OS. But there are too many Linux machines already using Linux for making money. So, Informix is in even less of a position for understanding. The hope is that until this "undiscovered country" is quantified, that vision will seep into the top minds at Informix, and they will get the port done. This will put a chink in the armour of a lot of arguments against using Linux, especially for commercial purposes. It will probably open a floodgate of other software vendors who will see the wisdom, and go for it as well.
