Real documentation for Informix C-functions?

Is there a real documentation for the C-functions that Informix uses. I'm referring to the function calls that ESQL/C emits. I've got the functions prototypes from J Leffler, but they do not explain anything about the functionality. One can only look at his names for the parameters, run .ec file through the esqlc-precompiler and try to find out from the output what they really do!! I'm struggling to connect my C++ classes to Informix 5.00 and ESCL/C code is useless for that purpose. I've already done this for Oracle, using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) which is clearly documented. Why does Informix not publish this interface to their engine?
