Re: help with informix on windows oncheck -pr erro
Posted in 2012
On Windows IDS 11.50, oncheck -pr failed with "Invalid character(s) in DBSERVERNAME or DBSERVERALIASES" (it was picking up the machine's fully-qualified host name), and the user was confused by the oncfg_* file being reported as the configuration file. Advice given: DBSERVERNAME should be lower case; oncfg_*.SERVERNUM files are internal server files, so ONCONFIG must point at the real onconfig; renaming an instance on Windows requires registry changes (documented procedure), start with "starts %INFORMIXSERVER%", and DBSERVERNAME must match the registry sqlhosts entry and the services file. After a botched rename the instance wouldn't start, so the user reinstalled Informix, having to remove the stale entry in \\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\drivers\\\\etc\\\\services to reuse the old port; that got things working.

more information
Domain: st-network.maf.govt.nz
from config file
SERVERNUM 0 # Unique id corresponding to a server instance
DBSERVERNAME apecert_ST # Name of default Dynamic Server
DBSERVERALIASES apecert_ST_drda # List of alternate dbserver n
the error
C:\\\\Users\\\\oliverk-admin>oncheck -pr
Invalid character(s) in DBSERVERNAME or DBSERVERALIASES
(HVGREYST19.st-network.maf.govt.nz).
Error in value of a parameter in the ONCONFIG file.
I also note onstat -c does not read ONCONFIG file but
reads the Configuration File: C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic
Server\\\\11.50/etc/oncfg_apecert_ST.0
which is different than what unix does is this correct ?
If you're still on tests, could you try to put the DBSERVERNAME with only
lower case letters? I doubt it will make a difference, but the DBSERVERNAME
should always be ONLY lower case.
If this does not solve the issue you could try to remove the underscore,
but I think that should make no difference.
Regards.

tried to change DBSERVER name in onconfig fiole but did not work- name bnot in
registery.
so tried to change back to original now get message below.
Why is oncfg
being refered to as the config file ?
shouldnt it be onconfig ...... or is it diffrent naming in windows
C:\\\\Users\\\\oliverk-admin>oninit -v
Checking group membership to determine server run mode...succeeded
Reading configuration file 'C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic
Server\\\\11.50/etc/oncfg
cceeded
Initialization failure: INFORMIXSERVER env. value and DBSERVERNAME in ONCONFIG
are different
Sorry.... my mistake. Renaming an instance in Windows is not that simple:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/topic/com.ibm.admin.doc/id
s_admin_0037.htm
And you should not start it with oninit. Use "starts %INFORMIXSERVER%"
Although we all would like to use exactly the same commands, basic
differences between the operating systems force some minor changes.

thanks for link Fernando I will do some reading
ok sounds like silly question but how do i find out what ONCONFIG variable is
on windows ?
which is likely to be correct
set ONCONFIG=oncfg_apecert.0
::set ONCONFIG=ONCONFIG.apecert
oncfg_*.SERVERNUM files are internal files created and managed by the
server.
Set ONCONFIG to the proper ONCONFIG file
Regards.

I have changed DBSERVERNAME to lower case name and stopped insatnce NOw it wont even start. Get no messages at all in log tried starts <name> from command line and also tried starting services from services menu any ideas anyone?
Check the holy trinity: Onconfig DBSERVERNAME matches Registry and service there matches = %WINPATH%\\\\system32\\\\drivers\\\\etc\\\\services j. cant find any entry in reg for DBSERVERNAME I am going to set up from scratch again. Who would have thought setting up informix on windows would be so hard. Give me UNIX any day ! Thanks for people suggestions anyway
Sorry, I should have been clearer. Under HKEY_CURRENT_MACHINE\\\\Software\\\\Informix\\\\sqlhosts (or something = like that) You should find your server name as well as a service name That service name should match the services entry. j. completely installed Informix again. However got caught out when trying to use same port as previously. Had to edit C:\\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\drivers\\\\etc\\\\services and remove service before I could use port. Things looking better now
