The sqlexecd is just a network listener which listens for attempts to connect to the server. If you want to prevent new connections then sending kill -9 to the sqlexecd is the correct approach. But if you need to backup the data or perform other maintenance you also need to make sure there are not current users with existing connections to the data files. You can do this by looking for sqlexec processes or, if you OS supports it, use the /etc/fuser utility on the data and index files to see what processes, if any, have the files open. DO NOT kill -9 any sqlexec processes as this may cause data or index damage or cause locking problems later on. Instead shutdown the applications that parent the sqlexec's gracefully if possible if not send kill -PIPE followed by kill -TERM to the app and its sqlexec so the sqlexec can perform cleanup. > > 2)Can i truncate the transaction log file without shutdown SE ? Again there is not formal shutdown, but if you mean while there are active users attached the answer is no. If you mean while the sqlexecd is running with no active users, no problem. Art S. Kagel
