oninit -i failure

I'm trying to startup informix for the first time on a CentOS 4.5
server. When I run oninit -i , I get the following error:
ONCONFIG can only specify a simple filename with no path components.
I have no idea what is causing the error, and I have found nothing in
the docs about it.
Can any one help me out?
Here is my onconfig:

Found the problem
I had $ONCONFIG=/opt/informix/etc/onconfig.
Should have been $ONCONFIG=onconfig
