Re: Looking for 2 Informix Leads and 6 Informix Developer - Urgent
Posted in 2007
Not a technical problem thread: it starts as a job posting (Informix leads/developers for a Chennai-based firm, project in Kuala Lumpur) and drifts into an argument about IBM offshoring and alleged US layoffs, with one poster disputing the 150,000 figure. A reader asks where Informix is actually used; Art Kagel lists examples (Visa transactions, telecom and internet routing, 911 systems, major retailers, World Cup stats), and Malcolm notes big firms mix database technologies to fit each application. No technical issue or fix is recorded.

relax, ibm is sending all their jobs to india, so you and yours will have plenty of work in india, courtesy of ibm. ibm is going to the extra special trouble of laying off as many as 150,000 people in the usa just so they can relocate the work to india. you won't have to come to the usa, there won't be any work for you, it'll all be right in your own home town. you'll be able to learn first hand just how greedy ibm is, without ever having to come to the usa. enjoy! yes, you're correct... but over time they will hit this number in the usa, so it's possible. ibm will go to any developing country that they can exploit with lower wages to increase their bottom line. no sense in letting the people who get them the profits share in the profits, we can't have any of that. they're not alone, but it should be noted that corporate greed is really the motivator here. see also: http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2007/pulpit_20070504_002027.html Marco Greco wrote: > > Tool wrote: >> relax, ibm is sending all their jobs to india, so you and yours will have >> plenty of work in india, courtesy of ibm. ibm is going to the extra special >> trouble of laying off as many as 150,000 people in the usa just so they can relocate >> the work to india. you won't have to come to the usa, there won't be any work for >> you, it'll all be right in your own home town. you'll be able to learn first hand >> just how greedy ibm is, without ever having to come to the usa. enjoy! >> > > Just to dispel a myth:- IBM doesn't have 150k employees in the US alone, and > it certainly wouldn't hire more in order to hit the quoted layoff figure.

In the USA alone, every Visa credit and debit card transaction is routed and processed by an Informix database, a large percentage of the long distance telephone traffic in the US is routed via Informix databases, a similarly large percentage of the Internet traffic in the US is routed via Informix. Most jurisditions in the US use a 911 Emergency Call system that is built over an Informix database. Eight of the 10 largest retail organizations in the world use Informix. World Cup Soccor stats are recorded in real time in an Informix database. And on and on. Art S. Kagel

Kagel Hey that's great for all of us isn'it now we all should work to move informix to the peak in other countries............as it's an lot more consistent and low price and less configuaration as compare to any other database even oracle..iam i right?
Whilst I agree with everything that Art says I would also like to point out that most of the major multi-nationals have a policy of using different technologies based on which one fits the requirements of the application best. And none of the Database products offer a one-size fits all. I even know of some large database vendors that use other vendor's technologies. And with embedded technologies often the end-users are completely unaware of the technology behind the application. You see parallels to this in nearly every area of computing. As a technology matures there are more axamples of cross-fertilisation even going as far as one vendor selling another vendor's equipment.
