HDR Setup
Posted in 2012
Keith was setting up HDR between two AIX servers (IDS 9.4) and found the Admin Reference says both servers must be quiescent when issuing onmode -d primary/secondary, while the Admin Guide doesn't. Art Kagel and others confirmed the usual practice: leave the primary fully online, back it up, restore physically on the secondary (ontape -p, leaving it quiescent), then run onmode -d on each side; Madison Pruet suggested the quiescent advice only aims to limit log consumption. Keith did this successfully on his live instance; IBM's doc manager agreed to log the inconsistency as a documentation defect. Keith then hit a separate issue with ER and non-logged sbspaces, left unresolved here.

I "was" in the middle of setting up HDR between a pair of AIX 5.3 servers running IDS 9.4.FC6 (upgrade planned), but have just noticed in the Admin Ref that the servers should be quiescent when issuing the onmpde -d primary/secondary 'server name' commands. This requirement isn't mentioned in the Admin Guide section on setting up HDR. How critical is this quiescent mode ? I ran a quick test on a small, unused instance which appeared to set-up with no ill effect, but do not want to put my live instance at risk. Keith
I have only ever issued the onmode -d commands with the primary in full
online mode and the new secondary in quiescent mode following a physical
restore (onmode -p).

The only reason I can think of for this would be to minimize the risk o= f excessive log consumption while setting up the HDR secondary. Thanks muchly. Took the 'risk' run onmode -d primary|secondary on the relevant
servers with the primary fully on-line and secondary at the end on an ontape
-p.
All is well, logs are shipping to make up the 12 hours between archive
start/tape
transport/archive end and I expect a bright shiny HDR pair within the hour. :-)
Documentation is a bit inconsistent between Admin Guide and Admin Reference
regarding this process and associated commands !!
Thanks again
Keith

Madison Thanks for the reply. Art responded also and I now have HDR running and shipping outstanding logs. Documentation could do with clarification on this point and cross-checking to provide some consistency :-) Keith. Keith,
We do this all of the time.
You stay online on the primary.
On the primay:
1. Backup the instance : ontape or onbar
2. Copy the backup to the secondary server
3. Onmode -d primary <name of secondary instance>
Note : do not forget to modify the necessary onconfig parameters; this step
might need to stop the engine if the parameters were not set up yet(DRINTERVAL)
On the secondary:
1. Restore the backup coming from the primary ( physical restore)
Ex: ontape -p
2. Onmode -d secondary <name of primary instance>
The replication Will be set up after synchronization of the logs depending on
the amount of logs filled since the backup.
The primary will become online(prim). and the secondary read only (sec)
Note: test you network connections first.

Thanks all. Sorted this bit out but have just run foul of ER and non-logged
SBSPACES :-((
Need to sort some down time to make them logged (also sort out sqlhosts
groups) and then try again next week.

Hi Keith, Thanks for pointing out the inconsistency between the Admin Guide and Admin Ref. We'll log this as a documentation defect and fix the inconsistency (and also make sure that this information is complete and clear based on this thread). Let me know if you have any other input or requests related to the information. Thanks! Hai-Nhu Tran Manager of the Informix documentation team
