Details: I have Informix-Online 4.1 (the engine), I-STAR (the network server), and Informix-SQL (the SQL interface) running on an hp9000/835 (running HP-UX 8.0). The hp is connected to an ethernet. There are gateways from localtalk networks to the ethernet. I have various Macintoshes (IIsi, IIcx, ...) running various systems (6.0.x, 7.0, 7.0.1) that are on either the ethernet or the localtalk network. (The Macintoshes are all running MacTCP, obviously.) Comments: Wingz is a spreadsheet product by Informix for the Macintosh (among other platforms). Informix also makes DataLink, which is a collection of scripts and externals for Wingz that allows access to Informix databases over the network. This would be fine, except that I need a better front end than Wingz. I don't want a spreadsheet interface, so I've developed a modeless dialog window based interface, using Wingz's scripting language (HyperScript) and some C externals. The interface needs improvement (particularly in the area of display speed, but also in regards to transfer speed to/from the database), and I've used all the tricks I can think of. Thus, I have deemed Wingz to be insufficient for my needs. (Any suggestions for improving performance would also be welcome.) I have talked with Informix sales reps., and the best that they've been able to come up with is Graphical Query Language (GQL), by Andyne Computing, which doesn't appear to allow adding/changing database information. There's also Z-LINK, by Applied Resource Technologies, Inc., but this product is just a replace for DataLink - it still uses Wingz. I really need a better application, or my entire project may just take a nosedive. Potential users can be very annoyed by "progress" that causes pain and frustration, even if it does have an upside. Thanks: Thanks in advance for any replies. If I get more than a few replies, I'll summarize and post. I read all the newsgroups I posted this article to, so, if you feel it's necessary, you can post a reply instead of sending mail. Dave Flowers dflowers@caltech.edu
