Xenix Operating System.

Friends of Xenix: This query is not a direct Informix problem, however, it is related in that without solving our problem we can not use our informix programs. We are using an Intel 310 Multiuser system running under Intel Xenix v. 3.5. Prior to installing any informix SQL or 4GL we had experienced a "system failure" during the reboot procedure. We had a number of "Bad Blocks" reported during the standard "fsck -y" test. After having run several system diagnostics tests we determined we had a hardware failure. This turned out to be two cable connectors on the back of the Intel 311 external disk drive unit. With these repaired and the system reassembled we attempted to run the "fsck -y" test again, once again we had several "bad block" errors. Using the "fixbb" command we corrected all the bad blocks, only to have one of the original errors reappear. An attempt to use fixbb on this block gave us a new error, "Block 25 has already been fixed". After consulting many of the Xenix manuals and local experts it was determined that we may have a corrupted hard drive and that we should attempt to reformat the external drive. This has been done, it has been reconfigured, added to the device table, created the file system for the drive, mounted the new system, loaded the backup tape to the external drive, and tested the operation of the entire system. Under normal conditions everything appears to function normally. We shut the system down to single user and performed the fsck -y test to all three file systems, /dev/rroot, /dev/rusr, /dev/rusr2; all three file systems tested good, no errors, no bad blocks. We next shut the system down completely and performed a warm boot. After the initial self tests of the cpu, at the prompt " . or cr " we selected the extended testing by pressing the "." (System Debug Monitor (iSDM)). We selected the "wtc" option from the menu to perform tests on the external hard drive, the following error appeared on the monitor: "error in label: device granularity FAIL". Our problem and our question is: What dose "error in label: device granularity FAIL" mean in English? And how can we correct this error? We have two other Intels, one of which is configured in the same manner, one internal hard drive, and one external hard drive. All other system functions and program functions appear to operate normally with the sole exception of the the above stated test. We feel it is important to resolve this test error before installing SQL or 4GL as the user accounts will be stored in the external drive. I know this is long winded, I felt the more background information the better able you might be able to offer insight into our problem. Perhaps this is not enough info, if not my signature block has phone numbers and "Pony Express" address. Thanks ahead of time for reading this, even if you can't help us. Michael S.
