Large Pages on AIX
Posted in 2012
User reported that Informix 11.70FC4 on AIX 6.1 showed the message 'Shared memory segment will use large pages if available,' but svmon output indicated 16 MB large pages weren't actually being used (0 inuse). No resolution was provided in the thread; a follow-up question about general large pages guidelines was answered by others noting performance improvements on systems supporting them.

11.70FC4 on AIX 6.1
Were being told that we should enable LARGEPAGES for fast initialisation and
performance.
But, its not working for some reason:
The relevant variables are set
.
$ onstat -c | grep RESIDE# RESIDENT - Controls whether shared memory is resident.
RESIDENT 1$ env | grep IFX
IFX_LARGE_PAGES=1
$ onmode -ky ; oninit -v
And we get the will try to use large pages message:

Hi Neil,
I already have this issues here.
You need to configure and active the pin memory :
Commands like :
(this command will take some time... allocating the memory)
# vmo -p -o lgpg_regions=6000 -o lgpg_size=16777216
# vmo -p -o v_pinshm=1
check the situation of memory with svmon (pin in use)... for example the
configuration what we use here (AIX 6.1)
The database is using large pages and is working with 180GB allocated
(to start don't take more of 30 seconds)
$ svmon -G -O unit=auto,pgsz=on
Unit: auto
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
size inuse free pin virtual
available mmode
memory 210.00G 209.93G 75.0M 209.02G 198.69G

pg space 10.5G 0.95G
work pers clnt other
pin 191.10G 0K 0K 6.05G

I would suggest doing a 'bosboot' command to make sure that everything is
good after reboot.
Another way to check all is well:
Validate large page support is used with the following command:
vmstat -l 1
Note: The "alp" column is non-zero when the application is running.
