Scanning images for Online
Posted in 1992
I would like to use DOS or MAC workstations on an ethernet LAN to be able to scan B/W images and store them in a back-end database residing on a Unix host. I am happy with the modus-operandi of of storing and retrieving BLOB fields in an Online database, including using Optical storage sub-systems. I am also happy with the Windows or Mac based scanning and printing solution. What is holding me back is a "seam-less" integration of front-end and back-end. I have looked at using I-Net (Dos or Mac) but that requires an application like Wingz that knows about images and can talk to a SQL server direct (via Datalink). Not exactly smooth. I have looked at a combination of rcp and rcmd to perform the archiving/retrieval operation, utilising applications residing on the back-end (E-SQL/C typically). That works but requires moving from one application to another on the front-end. The target users will be of the data-capture variety, and I would like the minimum oppor- tunities for things to go wrong. I would appreciate any hints/comments/real-world experiences. Thanks in advance. -- .............................................................
