Re: Killing off client threads

It seems to me that a proper solution to this problem requires processes on each machine (client and server) that talks to each other and sends keep alive packages of some sort while the client is idle. The ODBC driver on the client machine should either know when the client has crashed, or more likely crash with the client. There need to be a special server side process that keeps sending keep alive packages to the client. If there is no responce (or a responce that the client program crashed) this server process could gracefully disconnect from the database and terminate any server side processes. Open transactions would of course be rolled back. This type of setup should be easy to implement within ODBC drivers where a part of it runs on the server (like OpenLink, SQL Retriever and others). We should simply have to tell the driver writers about this requirement and they should deliver it within a reasonably short time. I actually think they will. That's the way the world can work and should work. Informix should of course implement the same functionallity within I-Net, but I would expect that to take some time. ammist@io.com (The Mist) wrote: :Hello - : I've been following the discussion about idle client threads for :the past couple of days because I'm having a similar problem.
