Not Oracle!

Hello all,
We have a mixed shop of NT, Linux, and Solaris. When we started looking at
buying our first RDBMS, we inquired about Oracle and followed the Oracle NG.
There was a very long thread about which RDBMS was the 'best' and the answer
was resoundingly Informix. So, after following this newsgroup for a while,
we purchased Informix 7.30.UC7-2 for Linux, and have tried and tried to
install it, but it doesn't like us.
I rpm'd it into RedHat 6.1, set my environment variables, configured
onconfig and sqlhosts, said onstat and it keeps telling me it can't find the
server. My sqlhosts file says:
lepidoptera onipcshm 192.168.1.137 lepidoptera
The onconfig names DBSERVERNAME as lepidoptera. So, what am I missing here?
The goal is to communicate with a database we will create from an NT www
server using either ODBC or JDBC.
Many thanks,

Did you 'oninit -ivy' (complete initialize disk, it is needed only for the 1st
time!!!!)?;-)
PS : And if you want to connect from JDBC/ODBC on NT to IDS on linux,
you should add DBSERVERALIASES in your onconfig file and 1 line in you sqlhosts
file for TCP/IP connection.

OK, you went through the configuration but you have not started the
database engine. The first time the engine is started it has to create
certain on disk structures so you have to add a flag to the startup that
you will NEVER use again (unless you start a second instance on another
disk partition). The engine process is 'oninit' and the initialization
flag is '-i' which will prompt you to make sure you want to do that since
if there were an already configured database structure on disk it will
wipe it out, so you also need the '-y' flag to eliminate the prompt since
you know it is safe the first time. Also many add the verbose flag to
startups to see if the startup fails what was happening at the time, this
is the '-v' flag. So the first time engine startup command is:
oninit -ivy
You may want to start a 'tail -f' on the message log (MSGPATH in the
ONCONFIG file) first so you can watch the normal startup messages in
addition to the verbose oninit output (if the file does not exist just
'touch' it first the engine appends to the existing log file). So now we
have:
touch $INFORMIXDIR/online.log # My normal MSGPATH value
tail -f $INFORMIXDIR/online.log &
oninit -ivy
Once you have started the engine you can use onstat, onmonitor, oncheck
and the other utilities to monitor and manipulate the server and
databases. You will now have to create other dbspaces in addition to the
ROOTDBS and preferrably move your logical and physical logs to separate
dbspaces, create temp dbspaces for temp tables and sorting and of course
create and load your databases but you are now on your way.
In the future, for example in you rc script, you just need 'oninit' or
'oninit -v' to start the engine.
If you have continued trouble post your ONCONFIG and sqlhosts files,
output from uname -a, output from oninit -v, and the contents of the
MSGPATH file showing the failed session startup. We will do our best to
help out. This IS a great engine it just takes a bit of patience to get
started the first time until you understand what you are doing better.
