The architecture is designed to let users generate Web pages with individualized content and deliver updated pages to specific users. The promise of generating customized Web pages on the fly is gaining interest among customers. "We want to customize the experience to our members so that we generate a URL dynamically based on a user's preference and interests," said Meredith Flynn Ripley, vice president of product development for DiveIn, a part of US West Interactive. (11/18/96, pg. 26, Juan Perez) COMPUTERWORLD ON-LINE "Informix unwraps Web tools" Informix's new Universal Web Architecture lets users store entire Web sites, including multimedia content plus the application logic and templates, into an Informix database. The Informix offering is built around middleware, called Universal Web Connect, that resides at a Web server and connects clients to applications and the back-end database. Universal Web Connect will ship in December for existing OnLine databases and will become available for use with the upcoming Universal Server in the first quarter of 1997. (11/12/96, on-line, Craig Stedman) INFORMATIONWEEK "Informix crafts Web Architecture" Informix is paving the way for its soon-to-be-released Universal Server object relation database with a new software architecture and products designed to build multimedia Web sites. Informix's Universal Server Architecture, a software environment for developing Web applications, will work with INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server and Illustra databases, as well as the Universal Server. Software companies developing products for Web Connect include Bluestone, FutureTense, Haht Software, NetDynamics, OneWave and Wallop. The American Medical Association is using an early version of Universal Web Connect, and other companies using Informix technology to build Web sites include CS First Boston, The Seattle Times and Warner Bros. "Informix is effectively providing a single, simplistic middleware technology to ease the development of Internet applications," said Steve Hendrick, an analyst with International Data Corp. By June, Informix will release INFORMIX-JWorks, a drag-and-drop Java tool that lets developers create Web-based applications, such as data entry and OLTP. Informix will also release a component version of its existing NewEra development tool that can support Java and ActiveX components. The Universal Web Connect module resides behind a Web server and manages distributed applications and their components written in Java, C++ and NewEra 4GL. Another module, JWorks, lets users quickly generate Web forms without programming. Also part of Informix's new architecture is its Java API, which will be incorporated into its Universal Server. Dubbed Universal Web Architecture, the plan rivals Oracle's Network Computing Architecture. Informix also announced Universal Web Connect, a set of middleware services for building client/server intranet Web applications. Users of HahtSire development tool will be able to build and manage intranet applications that take advantage of Universal Web Connect. (11/11/96, on-line, Jeff Sweat) INTERACTIVE WEEK ON-LINE "Informix, Wallop team to bring Web content into database" Through a partnership with Informix and Wallop Software, companies will be able to bring their own Web sites into databases, consolidating all content into a central repository. In the next release of Wallop's "Build-IT" software, Wallop will add the capability for developers to deploy their Web sites from an Informix database, guaranteeing a high level of protection and performance, and resulting in less downtime. Universal Server combines Informix's relational database with Illustra DataBlade technology, and has been in beta testing since September. (11/15/96, on-line, Craig Stedman) GOVERNMENT COMPUTER NEWS "Industry exec of year Phil White is betting on smart cards, not NC" Phil White, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Informix, was recently named Industry Executive of the Year for 1996 by GOVERNMENT COMPUTER NEWS. In an interview with White, he notes that digital content, such as text, audio, video and still images, is going to be king. White said Informix is developing a card query language based on Structured Query Language commands for smart cards, and is also "putting fingerprints into the card chip so [smart cards] are secure."
