We found that in releases prior to 7.12, the reopening of a
previously declared scroll cursor was slow and extremely memory
intensive. This has been fixed in 7.12 (at least on DG,
NCR,HP-UX, but probably all). The main problem could be best
displayed by doing an onstat -g ses #. The ralloc column would
continue to rise until the engine consumed hundreds of Meg of
memory even with very few users. It is still unclear if the
reopening of normal cursors caused this same anomoly, but we
suspect it did - however less drastically than scroll cursors
did. Once in this 'memory heavy' state, any access to the
engine was slow.
