Informix migration to DB2 is it simple?
Posted in 2003
A user whose vendor (Provia) only supports Informix 7.31 on Linux asked whether moving to DB2 8.x would be straightforward, given that PeopleSoft, Baan and SAP had already ported to DB2. Replies were opinion rather than fact: one SAP shop said they were advised to wait for IBM/SAP to smooth the path and recommended getting IBM and the vendor reps in a room; others argued DB2 offers nothing over IDS except perceived longevity, and doubted the two engines would ever truly merge, expecting any move to still require unload/reload, retuning and code changes for SQL differences. No firm answer or migration experience was reported.

HAs anyone migrated to DB2 yet? Our vendor Provia wants to sell us Informix 7.31 but we know DB2 v. 8x is coming soon. PeopleSoft, Baan, and SAP have ported to DB2, Provia hasn't, they still want to sell us Informix 7.31 on Linux. Any advice, war-stories, or comments would be appreciated.
I imagine PeopleSoft, BAAN, and SAP ported to DB2 before IBM bought Informix. We have SAP, but are not being forcibly pushed to DB2. Matter of fact, I was told to wait until SAP & IBM finish working together to make the upgrade a smooth one. (I anticipate minimal downtime versus a multi-day outage to migrate to Oracle). We had concerns regarding our future with SAP and Informix. IBM was more than willing to come talk to us. Several IBM'ers came out (sales rep and techies from both Informix and DB2 product lines). SAP joined in on the phone. Contact your IBM and Provia reps... get them talking to you.... Our opinions count, but you gotta get the story straight from the source.... I'm not aware of any migrations. Why do you want to? >DB2 isn't going to give you anything over and above Informix.... except an assurance that it will be around for a long time. Isn't that a reason big enough to start investing in DB2 over Informix. Ravi
Yea, but you remember the thread previously about the future of informix... DB2 is IBMs future with DB2/Eagle or whatever they plan on calling the merger of the two DB systems. Well, this all depends. IMHO, they will never merge the code of DB2 and IDS; they will only add DB2 features into IDS and vice versa until they are relatively similar in features. Operationally, I doubt they will ever "merge", and I have no reason to suspect that a migration will ever be any different than unload, reload, tune and make code changes to support subtle differences. I am still hugely sceptical of the idea that just implementing all the features of IDS into DB2 will make a port trivial, but if any IBMers on the list know any different (and are allowed to say so) I'd be just as keen as the next man (or woman, or transgender person) to hear about it. -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien à dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche "Necrophilia means never having to say ... well, anything!" - Captain Pedantic "Ogni uomo mi guarda come se fossi una testa di cazzo" - Marco From: "Konikoff, Rob (Contractor)" <konikoffr@BRAGG.ARMY.MIL> > >Yea, but you remember the thread previously about the future of informix... >DB2 is IBMs future with DB2/Eagle or whatever they plan on calling the >merger of the two DB systems. > >Rob > >-----Original Message----- >From: Obnoxio The....
