Guidelines for using views

Hello there, I am looking for a set of guidelines for using views. Those guidelines are written down in order to make an easy management of them. For exemple, the number of view level to use in a view (a view on top of multiple views on top of other views). I am also looking for guidelines on "how-to" link views to application design. Presently, in order to implement a specific design requirements we built views that the application will use. Is there anything we should know that would make this difficult to manage ?
