Goodbye Informix, and good luck
Posted in 2000
Hi all Well it's official. We're moving to Oracle. The reasons are mainly monetary. My employer has such a cosy deal with Oracle that, even after training me in it (for ~AUD$10K), they're still going to be saving (in the short and long term). So another site makes the defection (or is that defecation:) to the big O. My boss rung our contact (account manager ? person who takes the money ? we're not even exactly sure what they do) at Informix Oz and told them of our planned move so please don't bother sending us any more invoices. And guess what - no pleas, no last minute requests for reconsideration, not even an academic interest in why we would want to make such a move. Just a cheery and polite "Oh, Ok ! Thanks for letting us know!". Sure my unit isn't that big but the company is, well, pretty big (200,000 employees?), one which you'd imagine you'd want to keep on board. Or perhaps not. Hmph. When I contacted Oracle Education thru their web site, I had the Training person ringing me, explaining this and that, sending me a quote for the courses, doing follow-up calls... Couldn't keep 'em quiet ! Anyway I hope the future goes well for Informix - it's been an excellent product for the 1.25 years I've been admin'ing it. Fast, easy to tune and diagnose, well put together, stable as a rock, and with a great ng. That's another thing I'll miss. Man have you seen the s/n ratio in c.d.o.s ?? Newbie city. So just wanted to say thanks all for all your advice - you've all been a great help and it's much appreciated.
