I guess that you have to set it to sqlrm, in order to communicate 4.x tool with 7.x engine. This is lower that direct conection, so why you don't try to upgrade your tool too? In OWS you to configure the conectivity via a file called sqlhosts ($INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts) which contains all the posible ways (tcp, shm, str) to connect to the database.
