IBM Informix - 4gl Installed in the same directory
Posted in 2013
A user installed Informix 11.70FC7IE (Innovator-C) and I4GL RDS 7.50.FC5 into the same INFORMIXDIR on RHEL 5.3: fglpc compiled fine, but fglgo segfaulted; installing 4GL into a separate directory worked. Art Kagel explained that the tools (I4GL, R4GL, ISQL) were last built against CSDK 3.50.FC2 and are no longer library-compatible with newer engine/CSDK builds, so they can't share an INFORMIXDIR (installing tools over the engine can even break engine startup). The recommended options were to keep separate directories, file a feature request with IBM, or migrate to a 4GL clone (Genero, Lycia, Aubit4GL). No fix for same-directory installation was reported.

Hello guys!
Other time, I have a question about informix and 4gl.
I've installed Informix Innovator-C Edition 11.70FC7IE and Informix 4GL RDS
Development 7.50.FC5 Linux x86 64 Bit in the same directory.
When I compile with fglpc I don´t have any problem but when I try to execute
with fglgo I get this message: "segmentation fault".
SO is Linux Red Hat Enterprise 5.3
The enviromnment variables are:
export INFORMIXDIR=/home/informix
export INFORMIXSERVER=mision
export ONCONFIG=onconfig.$INFORMIXSERVER
export INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts
export PATH=/bin:/sbin:$PATH:.:$INFORMIXDIR/binexport
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${INFORMIXDIR}/lib:${INFORMIXDIR}/lib/esql:${INFORMIXDIR}/lib/tools:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
Also, for other test, I installed 4gl in other directory too, changing
environment variables to:
export INFORMIXDIR=/home/informix/4gl
export INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=/home/informix/etc/sqlhostsexport
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${INFORMIXDIR}/lib:${INFORMIXDIR}/lib/esql:${INFORMIXDIR}/lib/tools:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
And with this way, the compilation and execute are ok. I don't get errors.
My applications needs that the Informix Server and 4GL are intalled in the
same directory, thats the reason for I don't want to work with the second
option.
Could anyone help me?
Regards.
Hi.
If you installed CSDK. Try re-installing 4GL and IDS with out sdk.

Informix tools (so I4GL, R4GL, and ISQL ) can no longer be installed in the
same INFORMIXDIR as the database server itself. This is because IBM has
made the decision that the last compile of these tools (IB it was with the
CSDK v3.50.FC2) is the last compile. I was told that they "have no plans
to recompile the tools with the latest CSDK versions after that one."
Since some objects were moved from library to library and some internal
function signatures have changed in the later CSDK versions, the tools are
no longer compatible with the engine. Whichever is installed first -
whether tools or engine - will not run because of the shared library
incompatibility.
Here's the strangest one: I have a client who builds lots of custom
sperform runners. If the runners contain any ESQL/C code, they have to be
compiles in the engine's environment as static executables. These runners
can then run in either the ISQL/tools environment or the engine's
environment.
I would suggest that you port your 4GL applications to one of the 4GL
clones: 4Js Genero, Querix Lycia-II, or Aubit4GL. Genero is sold and
supported by IBM. Lycia is less expensive than Genero and Aubit4GL is open
source and so free. Any of these will compile and run your 4GL source at
least as well as original Informix 4GL, will save you on support costs
(even after the new purchase in the case of Lycia and Aubit4GL), and will
be able to present your apps in GUI mode. Lycia and Genero can also
present your 4GL applications as web apps and on mobile devices (not sure
if Aubit4GL got there yet - they were close last time I checked) and
completely modernize them with little effort.

NO! Installing tools over the engine will likely cause the engine to not
be able to startup. See my previous post.

I spoke with IBM about this in early July and got the answer I posted "there are no plans ...". Certainly you can call and ask yourself if this has since been resolved and let us know. It would also be a good idea to enter a feature request (there is now an IBM Feature Request web page or you can just call support) for the tools you use (I4GL, R4GL, & ISQL) to be kept compatible with the current releases of the Informix Database engine. Personally I think that IBM has made a serious mistake on this. Historically, the tools are an important part of the Informix universe. The original company was Relational Database Systems and its original product, after CISAM (yes an Informix product) was the ISQL & 4GL application development environments which happened to come with a relational database built over CISAM. That database was what today is known as Informix Standard Engine and you got it free when you bought ISQL and/or 4GL. Originally you couldn't even buy the relational database separately! It was shortly after they realized the power and popularity of the Informix 4GL and Informix SQL products that they renamed the company to Informix Software back in 1983 or so. These "tools" aren't just legacy products, they are a Legacy. Anyway, I'm encouraging everyone who uses "tools" to enter a feature request to "Keep ISQL, C4GL, and R4GL installation and run time compatible with being installed in the same INFORMIXDIR with all currently supported Informix Dynamic Server database server software and CSDK releases". How do they expect to port 4gl etc to later OS versions which required later compiler versions? Regards, David.
