Backups - Any good utilities?

We are running Informix Online 4.x and 5.x on various machines. Currently, I use "tbtape" to backup the onlines (on some machines, we have 3 onlines running. On others, there may be one online containing >30 databases). This, in my opinion, is a really lousy tool for backups. Although it seems to provide for complete recovery, it has no provision to restore an individual database/table/record. I have never come across the need to restore a specific record... but, certainly, I would like to be able to restore a database. My temporary solution to the problem is to export each individual database to a disk file then backup the disk files. This is working from a script that cycles the Informix engine (to kick off any stray users) at 2am and exports each database to a compressed tar file. Right now, I have the necessary disk space... as the databases grow... who knows. I have to think that, somewhere, someone has run into the same problem. Am I mistaken or is it true that Informix has no utility to solve my problem. Does anyone have a better way? ---------- Paul Kopp pkopp@fll-ro.dhl.com * The opinions expressed are my own *
