Informix spatial data blade
Posted in 2006
A user asked whether a newer Informix Spatial DataBlade existed, since the docs dated from Aug 2002. An ESRI contact answered that 8.20.xC2 is the latest release, and explained that the DataBlade's core technology is licensed from ESRI, with updates issued only when a new ArcSDE version needs functionality the current DataBlade lacks — so the apparent staleness is expected. A follow-up poster raised ArcSDE questions (ODBC-only access, 32-bit ArcSDE against 64-bit IDS, poor performance versus Oracle, storage of spatial data in smart blobs); these got partial answers (unsupported 32/64-bit mix, a promised write-up), but no performance resolution is recorded.

I saw the latest version of Spatial datablade doc is dated back to Aug 2002. Do we have newer version? Thanks, Frank -- Yunyao "Frank" Qu Computer Sciences Corporation(CSC) NOAA/CLASS, (301)817-4696
Frank, > I saw the latest version of Spatial datablade doc is dated > back to Aug > 2002. 8.20.UC1 - that's is the version I have. > Do we have newer version? I don't think so; the latest version of the spatial datablade from IBM is, 8.20.xC2 Mike Badar ESRI-Denver 1 International Court Broomfield, CO 80021-3200 303-449-7779 mbadar@esri.com www.esri.com
Thank you, Mike ! I am wondering IBM does not continually support it? Frank, The core technology of the spatial datablade is licensed from ESRI. Updates to the datablade are provided by ESRI when a new version of ArcSDE requires functionality not available in the current release of the datablade. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Hi Mike, I take advantage of this question to ask further questions: 1. Is the only access from ArcSDE to INFORMIX IDS through ODBC? 2. I noticed that ArcSDE is 32 bits. Is there a 64 bit version that can communicate with IDS in 64 bits. I tried to communicate between ArcSDE in 32 bits and Informix IDS in 64 bits, it works but the communication is very slow especially if you try to bring a whole lot of data sequentially (60000 records in my test). 3. What optimization items can you do on the ArcSDE side. I know what needs to be done on the INFORMIX side. 4. We tried the same thing with Oracle, and the response time is much much better (2 seconds on Oracle and 18 seconds on Informix IDS). Is there something different on the oracle implementation of the access (no oracle cartridge is used). 5. Do you usually store the maps on separate files locally or on the server side usually blobs or smartblobs. Because of the performance problems I am having , I am going towards storing the maps locally (not on IDS). If my questions are not precise enough , I can give you more info. Thanks in advance. khaled ConsultiX EMail: khaled.bentebal@consult-ix.fr Mobile: 00 33 6 07 78 41 97 Selon Mike Badar <mbadar@esri.com>: > > Frank, > > The core technology of the spatial datablade is licensed from ESRI. > Updates to the datablade are provided by ESRI when a new version of > ArcSDE requires functionality not available in the current release of > the datablade. > > Please let me know if you have any further questions. > > Mike > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On > > Behalf Of Yunyao (Fra.... > > Sent: Thursday, May 11, 2006 2:02 PM > > To: ids@iiug.org > > Subject: Re: Informix spatial data blade [6700] > > > > > > Thank you, Mike ! > > > > I am wondering IBM does not continually support it? > > > > Frank > > > > Mike Badar wrote: > > > > >Frank, > > > > > > > > > > > >>I saw the latest version of Spatial datablade doc is dated > > >>back to Aug > > >>2002. > > >> > > >> > > > > > >8.20.UC1 - that's is the version I have. > > > > > > > > > > > >>Do we have newer version? > > >> > > >> > > > > > >I don't think so; the latest version of the spatial > > datablade from IBM > > >is, 8.20.xC2 > > > > > >Mike Badar > > >ESRI-Denver > > >1 International Court > > >Broomfield, CO 80021-3200 > > >303-449-7779 > > >mbadar@esri.com > > >www.esri.com > > > > > > > > > > >************************************************************* > > ****************** > > > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > -- > > Yunyao "Frank" Qu > > Computer Sciences Corporation(CSC) > > NOAA/CLASS, (301)817-4696 > > > > > > ************************************************************** > > ***************** > > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > > > > > > > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > >
khaled, > 1. Is the only access from ArcSDE to INFORMIX IDS through ODBC? Yes; there is no direct connect like their is with Obstacle. > 2. I noticed that ArcSDE is 32 bits. I setup this configuration for a customer at the UN last year; I also have this setup on a Solaris 9 box in my office. I am writing a document which describes how to implement the above configuration. When it is completed I will post it to the group. Important Note: This configuration is NOT SUPPORTED by ESRI. > 3. I would need to reproduce the problem before I could make any recommendations; do you have the data available at an FTP site? > 4. Because of the performance > problems I am having , > I > am going towards storing the maps locally (not on IDS). I'm not sure what you mean by "maps"? The entire reason for using an RDBMS with ArcSDE is so the store each spatial feature - point, line, or polygon - in a row of a table using a smart blob (if using IDS). When the client requests a feature(s) from the layer (table), ArcSDE retrieves the feature(s) from the smart blob(s) and passes the data back to the client. If you are using ArcSDE with IDS, the data are always stored on the server. > Thanks in advance. No problem. > > khaled > ConsultiX > EMail: khaled.bentebal@consult-ix.fr > Mobile: 00 33 6 07 78 41 97
