Displaying blobs on a PC

Are you running a vanilla pc, or windows 3.0 on the pc? Where do you want to trigger the program from, the 386 server or the PC? There are many public domain programs that display graphics held in various formats (tiff, et.al.) If you are just running from the DOS prompt, one of these may work for you. I would suggest running Windows 3.0. If you are running windows and the host is running TCP/IP you can then use WinQvtnet (a wonderful public domain program.) You get the Clarkson packet drivers for whatever card you have in your PC (also public domain.) WinQvtnet runs as a true windows app and talks to the packet drivers. WinQvtnet provides telnet, ftp and read-mail facilities from within windows. Then a simple windows program (maybe even the Norton Desktop off the shelf) will allow you to view the blobs. I am running this setup myself, a unix server with TCP/IP talking ethernet to my pc machines. The pc runs the packet driver and WinQvtnet. Although I also can run PC/NFS, I find that WinQvt is much nicer since I can run my telnet sessions as windows apps. I haven't tried it myself, but it is supposedly possible to run WinQvtnet and PC/NFS at the same time. I also haven't tried running the norton desktop with its included file viewer, but it is advertised as being able to display any file format in a window. If not, there are other public domain viewers for windows, or you could do a small windows-basic program which should be a no-brainer. -------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Mahler internet: pmahler@StarConn.com Consultant 1800 Market St. #257 voice: 415.327.6737 San Francisco, CA 94102 fax: 415.322.1603 "I work for myself; there's no one else to blame it on." -------------------------------------------------------------
