Informix v11.70 has "warehouse infrastructure features". general questions: does this mean IN the v11.70 download which i traditionally use for OLTP there now exists warehouse features regarding warehouse query optimization, etc? does this mean that i do NOT need to install a different flavor of Informix (such as warehouse edition) in order to get better warehouse type performance from my traditional OLTP database? does this mean i don't need a warehouse at all because my Informix v11.70 is so blazing good it can do both my OLTP and DW in one package (at least if i am not expecting to build a huge warehouse)? what happened to the "Informix Warehouse" ... is that still around or made rather obsolete due to v11.70 enhancements? thank you for your insight and thoughts, Norma Jean --0050450143e7ea412c049a35f215
Hi Norma!!!! Answering some of your questions: Informix Warehouse Feature is still up and running (and very good, and it´s a FREE tool). The warehouse features included in 11.70 covers several aspects, like index performances, and others. You could check some descriptions on the link below: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.p o.doc/new_features.htm Also there´s an excelent presentation on chat with labs site, but unfortunately my proxy here is blocking it.... "chat word" :P I hope this helps, ok? Best regards! But you should think on specific features. Don't tell anyone that I wrote this :) but keep the marketing message separate from the technical perspective. Yes, there are a lot of new functionalities that are traditionally useful for DW environments that are now included in the engine. But your "etc." can mean a lot of things... Some things that pop up to my mind at this moment: - star schema optimization (push down hash joins) - multiple index for one query - skip scan optimization - fragmentation improvements (more fragmentation schemes, more table availability....) > does this mean that i do NOT need to install a different flavor of Informix > (such as warehouse edition) in order to get better warehouse type > performance from my traditional OLTP database? > Yes. > does this mean i don't need a warehouse at all because my Informix v11.70 > is > so blazing good it can do both my OLTP and DW in one package (at least if i > am not expecting to build a huge warehouse)? > No. It means you can use Informix for your DW. 11.7 will be much better fitted for this kind of work. But please keep in mind that the data organization in a DW is completely different from OLTP. Yes, v11.7 is blazing good! :) > > what happened to the "Informix Warehouse" ... is that still around or made > rather obsolete due to v11.70 enhancements? > If you're referring to Informix Warehouse Featurew it's still around and included in the Ultimate Edition. Note that this is completely different from the technical features above. Informix Warehouse Feature is a simple ETL tool. So it does not replace the features above and it's not replaced by them. It can use the features to make a better work... Eventually this is an example where the marketing message can cause some confusion. The term "warehouse" is used in very different contexts. thank you for your insight and thoughts, > Norma Jean > No problem. By the way, it would be nice to allow comments in your blog (I couldn't find a way to write them... Am I missing something?) Norma, the "Warehouse Edition" was just normal IDS 11.50 packaged with IBM's ETL packages recently upgraded to work with Informix. No special optimizations at all. Yes, 11.70 has several features that make datawarehouse and DSS queries significantly faster! Here are just two: - Multiple Index Queries to optimize Star Schema queries joining multiple dimension tables to a single fact table via different keys. Now the Fact table can use the several constraint indexes of the foreign keys that link it to the dimension tables simultaneously! - New Star Schema Optimization. Two flavors: - Use Multi-index Scans to great a net list of matching rows - If there is a single compound index on the fact table on many of the dimension key columns, query and filter all dimension tables, generate a net list of matching rowids, use that to build a set of composite keys from the dimension tables and look that key up in the fact table's compound index. - More...
