Question about Informix 2.10 and 5.x

On a SCO Unix 3.2 we have the following configuration : an Informix SE 2.10 kernel an accounting application created with 4GL 2.xx (I have no access to the source code of this application) and of course a database (mybase.dbs) created with the kernel 2.10 We tried to access this database (mybase.dbs) from an application created with esql/c 4.xx or 5.xx over the 2.10 kernel, and of course we got an error message (a tool 4 or 5 is not compatible with a kernel 2) My question is how to be able to access to the database (in read only mode) from the application developped with esql/c 4 or 5 and also from the accounting application developped with 4GL release 2.xx ? Is it possible ? Can I install a kernel release 5 and still used a 4GL release 2.xx tool over this kernel?
