Ontape and unix password problem

Hello,
I have a customer who is attempting to change the informix password on
an AIX 4.3 machine. He is currently running 7.31 Informix server. When
he changes the unix password and restarts ontape he receives a message:
Server is in an incompatible state or user authentication failed.
I had him test it while I was watching and it is exactly as he says. I
tested
the same scenario with the database offline. I received the same
message.
I verified that the database was online the next time that he tried
this.
He is using the passwd command on Unix to change the password.
Has anyone seen this happen before?
Thank you for your help.

We got this message the other day when the midday level 1 archive was
run. Hmm! Any other ideas why this error could occur??
Nothing in the online log, just checkpoint complete messages before
AND after the time the error occurred.

We recently changed the Informix login password on all of our servers and
development machines with the engines online and no problems with the
archives so far. Of course our engines are started as root from the /etc/rc
scripts so that may be the difference here.

Tim,
Just to drop in some clues:
1. Are you able to login into informix w/o any problems ?
2. Are you running ontape thru a script which does not prompt for a
password ? Is there a remote server involved ?
3.Is there any security s/w installed on the system ?
