Informix space pads char columns and varchar columns to full length for type CHAR and FIXCHAR host variable types. The ESQL host variable types VARCHAR and STRING strip trailing spaces from CHAR columns and any trailing spaces in a VARCHAR that were not inserted specifically. The equivalent ODBC type is probably SQL_VARCHAR. Art S.
