RE: Informix vs. Oracle

I went ahead and decided to look at Informix's Benchmark numbers as well as Oracles. Oracle got Benchmarked on a S70 and a E10000 Having only worked with SUN and IBM these are the only two hardware vendors I understand the relative speeds of systems. Informix didnt even have a benchmark for SUN or IBM. In fact I think I could write a database which would outperform Informix when my database funs on a S70 and informix runs on a 520. Anyway, I tend to like to see benchmarks on like machines at least. What are you currently using as an image/storage manager? Are you intending to change image/storage managers? Most imaging solutions format optical platters in a proprietary format which makes retaining the existing platters extremely difficult when changing image/storage managers. Is you company prepared to invest in new optical platters? In our investigations we found the options for a transition fairly limited due to the cost of replacing the existing optical media. Another issue for us was the down time involved in platter migration. Our shop is using a customized version of Image Architect's DOX on the front end and Plexus' Storage Manager on the backend. The end result was the cost of replacing the platters effectively "locked" us into a Plexus solution. My intial suspision is that you are in a similar situation. IMHO the question of which imaging vendor you select for storage managment is a prerequisite for finding the database which will best suit your needs. On a more personal note, what was the "third party product" you are considering for optical/magnetic migration? Admittedly I don't know your situation but these are the first questions that come to mind. Thom _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
