Do i have to shut down and restart the DB engine if i make changes to 'Max # no of buffers' in Shared memory parameters ? (Sorry, This seems a very simple question as i am a new entrant in DBA area) Thanks
Mukund Yes, you must "bounce" the engine in order for the new value of BUFFERS to take place. It's not really a bad question; some parameters, for example TAPEDEV (but not LTAPEDEV) can be modified without bouncing the engine. It's not always obvious. Regarding any "online DBA" changes, I always issue a "tbmode -l" to churn the log files so that running applications will have access to the change. An example would be after adding a database or data object chunk to an existing database. I don't have to shutdown and restart after getting out of tbconfig, but I do have to issue the "tbmode -l". Note -- if you also issue a "tbstat -l" before and after the tbconfig/tbmode -l commands you will see the log file is now indeed changed. Regards, Larry Timmins
