Hi
I am using ids 9.4 on windows XP.
I have very little DBA knowledge. I run out of
spaces loading a table with a large unload file. I then
deleted all the rows from the table that had been successfully loaded
before running out of space. I STILL get the same error message
even though l have deleted all these rows. The ISAM error tells me
l need to add a chunk. I know l can use onspaces but am confused
with what l should pass it, for example -o offset ? l have looked
at examples but don't quite understand.
I am using rootdbs for my initial space.
Please could someone give me the exact command line l should
use to add a chunk to this dbspace.
Thanks in advance -
Umesh
Try onmonitor (assuming that still works in 9.4 and on XP), that'll walk
you through things rather simply.
An understanding of database concepts is helpful..... Since you have
"very little DBA knowledge" and most google results will bring a deluge
of oracle/sqlserver, but little informix, try reading parts of all of
the informix admin books at the ibm site.
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/
Another excellent resource is:
http://www.iiug.org/home.html
Also, one of the informix family's favorite advocates:

Of course, there may also be a kindly soul out here (there are many) who
has the time to take you under their wing and coach you through it in
complete detail.

You should not load all this data into rootdbs, add another dbspace (on
other chunks), call it what you want, but leave rootdbs alone (and
relatively small), you're only asking for trouble by relying on root for
all this.

I recommend using the onmonitor tool. For someone with little to no
experience, this tool would be better than the command line, it can help
you understand a tad bit more about the information required to add a
dbspace or a chunk. It's ascii graphical, at the very least, it will
give you field headings that perhaps you can look up at any of the
resources above to get a better understanding of what you are doing.
Good luck, be patient, informix won't let you down (can't say the same
for that operating system you're on.... ;))

First minor problem, you should not be putting real databases and tables in
rootdbs. You should have a separate dbspace(s) for your databases, tables,
indexes, etc., but that's an administrative and performance problem. I do not
understand. Are you still getting the error after loading the same number of
rows? Or immediately? If you did not add chunks to the dbspace then you will
still get the same error at about the same point. As to adding spaces, read up
in the Administrators' Reference manual on the onspaces command. The offset is
used if several smaller chunks will be allocated from a larger raw device or
file. So the first chunk in the file/device would have an offset of zero and
the next would offset by the size of the first, etc. If you are using a
filesystem file or an entire raw partition for a single chunk then the offset
will always be zero.
