I've seen this message before also. For me, the cause was trying to
bring an Informix engine up under a onsoctcp INFORMIXSERVER variable
and the user, either informix or root, didn't have a .rhosts file
entry for the host. I normally put two entries in the informix .rhosts
file, one with hostname and one with the DNS extensions. If this
isn't clear enough just email me personally, otherwise good luck!
