DAL and Informix

I have a small network of Macintoshes with an HP 9000 G30 server running HPUX 9.0.0 and informix online version 4.10. Informix is configured to use "raw" dbspace and not UNIX filespace (Excuse my terminology on this). I want to set up a DAL server and connect my mac applications directly into the database. I have acquired an evaluation copy of Independace technologies DAL product (version 1.5) This is substantially the same as Pacer/AGE's product. Using the DAL tester program provided with the software, I can connect and manipulate the db's without difficulty. What I need to do, however, is use Microsoft Excel 4.0 for the Macintosh for my users. During Excel's DAL setup I am prompted for "the complete path to the database as it would appear on the local system". Since my database is not in UNIX space I cannot do this. Even my VAR (who set up this system) cannot find a response that will satisfy Excel. Depending on what is entered, excel returns either "illegal path" or "cannot locate database". For some reason this problem has Microsoft, Independance and Informix tech support stumped. Re-configuring Informix is really not an option. I realize that I probably need to upgrade one or more of the pieces of software in question. Which one(s)?? Any Suggestions, comments or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
