define table name as parameter in spl

Hi gurus, I need to create a general stored procedure to modify always the the same column name but in different tables. Can I pass the table name to a procedure from a trigger and then, how can I use it in the procedure ? I tried to execute something like: "select * from $table_name" but it doesn't works.... TIA AV
