Actually, I am not entirely sure what you ARE complaining about. Yes, CDI is primarily a technical forum. I certainly don't want to see it FLOODED with commercials from vendors. However, we frequently see questions along the lines of "I need a product to do X, do you know of a good one?" and corresponding answers, some from (un)satisfied customers, some from vendors. No complaints about these, as long as the vendors don't send their entire sales pitch. The post you objected to said, in essence: We have a book that might be of interest to Informix types who want to become independent consultants. It contains tips in the following areas ... If you are interested, e-mail us for title and price." How is this different from a vendor announcing that they have a product that might be of interest, other than no question was asked first? Readers of this forum have already (mostly) agreed that they like to see occasional, brief, job postings. A book to help folks become independent contractors seems to more or less fall into this category. If you objected to the length of the message (it was only about 30 lines), why did you include the entire thing, rather than a 3 line paraphrase like mine above? So once again, what was your complaint? My own opinion is that I find short postings offering consultant books, or announcing new products, to be more worthwhile than super-basic questions from people who are too darn lazy to read the manuals. -- R.
