I don't think the problem is really in 4GL, but in the engine (if it's a
problem, since it's not considered a bug ;-)
The CONSTRUCT statement merely puts together a WHERE clause for you, based on
your input. In order to get the case insensitivity you want, CONSTRUCT could
turn your input "sm*" into
WHERE lname MATCHES "[Ss][Mm]*"
But this would only fix the CONSTRUCT statement (of course, if your application
does only QBE, you wouldn't mind just fixing CONSTRUCT). The place to put this
functionality is in the engine, so that if any user went into DB-Access and
typed:
SELECT * FROM customer WHERE lname = "Smith"
he would get the appropriate rows back. This kind of stuff can probably be
kludged with Stored Procedures, and probably has been by somebody (but not me).
