Logical Log Files are Full -- Backup is Needed
Posted in 2009
A test IDS 11.50 instance was stuck in fast recovery/transaction cleanup with "Logical Log Files are Full -- Backup is Needed", and onparams refused to delete logs. Suggestions: insert a new log with onparams -i, or (if the data is expendable) set LTAPEDEV to /dev/null and bounce the engine so logs are discarded automatically; ontape -a fails against /dev/null and during recovery. The poster resolved it by pointing LTAPEDEV at a real directory (/opt/app/informix/tmp), restarting, then running ontape -a to back up the logs. Art Kagel also noted LOGFILES can only be increased via onparams, which updates the ONCONFIG itself.

Hi,
Informix IDS complains that the logical logs are full. I am not able to
shutdown or use the database. Here is my onstat -m. Any help to bring the
system out of the "full recovery mode" is appreciated!

If you don't care about the data in your test server, you can set
LTAPEDEV /dev/null (or just nul, if you have a Windoze system) and
execute ontape -a to clear the logs.

OK, then. Set LTAPEDEV and restart the engine... keeping in mind that
EVERY time a log fills it will be automatically cleared and not backed
up.

I was hoping you had provided a solution for that!
But yeah, I got the error:
========
informix:/opt/app/informix$ ontape -s -L 0
Server is in an incompatible state or user authentication failed.
Program over.
========
informix:/opt/app/informix$ ontape -a
Performing automatic backup of logical logs.
Logbackup failed - Log backup to device '/dev/null' not allowed
Program over.
========
Note that I changed the parameter using onmonitor->Logical_logs. Still, even
on using another file (for LTAPEDEV) I got this error.
========
informix:/opt/app/informix$ ontape -a
Performing automatic backup of logical logs.
File created: /opt/app/informix/tmp/berlin_0_Log0000000001
Logbackup failed - No log backup allowed during recovery.
Program over.
========
What does it mean, and how can I solve this issue?
Thanks!
Only if he tried to run ontape -a, ontape -c, or onbar -a none of which are
required if you bounce the engine or use onmonitor (in UNIX) to change
LTAPEDEV to /dev/null

OK, if you want to run ontape -a to clear the logs by backing them up, you
have to set LTAPEDEV to a REAL file, say
/tmp/logical_log_throwaway_file.log. If you set LTAPEDEV to /dev/null using
onmonitor or manually followed by bouncing the instance, then you don't need
to run ontape the engine will automatically empty and discard the logical
logs (NOT back them up! discard them).

Okay, looks like setting LTAPEDEV to '/opt/app/informix/tmp' did work (atleast
for one log!)
I was able to restart the server, and run 'ontape -a' again to complete all
backups. I wonder why it had that hiccup though...
Incidentally, whenever I change the parameter LOGFILES to more than 6 in the
onconfig file, it reverts back to 6. why? why? why?
Each dbspace can have 32,767 logical log files at any time, isn't it?
The only way to add more logical logs is to run onparams which adds one
logical log file at a time and modifies the ONCONFIG file LOGFILES parameter
for you.
