IDS stops responding to net requests

Hi everybody, from time to time, after running a few days, our IDS 7.31.UC2AX4, serving two databases by a single instance stops responding to requests coming from clients having an ONSOCTCP network connection. However, shared memory connections on the local server work fine in this situation. Also, the general network functions of the machine are not affected in this case. There are no error messages. The server does OLTP with typically 30-50 active user threads. The machine is a RM400 (MIPS R4600) running ReliantUnix 5.44. Bringing INFORMIX (not the machine) down and up again solves the problem for the next few days ... Does anybody have an idea what's going on? TIA Hartmut Marten
We have had a similar situation. We found that when the front-end application disconnects from the DB that the tcp socket is left open. After hitting the max for a given port (32767 on my Solaris machine) the db will no longer accept tcp connections but the shared memory works fine. Testing by Informix showed this bug to be fixed in 7.31. The work-around is to bounce you engine. This will release all of the BOUND sockets. Try doing a "netstat -a command and see what is happening with the port that Informix is listening on. We had the same problem with IDS 7.30UC3 on a RM400/Reliant Unix 5.43. Siemens support couldn't really find the cause, but they suggested a workaround: Change the connection type from ONSOCTCP to ONTLITCP. This is done in the ONCONFIG file in the appropriate NETTYPE line (change from "soctcp" to "tlitcp" and in the sqlhosts file, if I recall correctly. It should be sufficient to apply these changes on the server machine only. We have been running with these settings without problems since, meanwhile with IDS 7.30UC10.
