Informix Authentication failure with Hp-Unix
Posted in 2015
User on Informix 12.10.FC4W1X3/HP-Unix experienced authentication failures (error 951) when connecting via JDBC/ODBC to a specific SDS node, despite valid credentials working locally and with other instances. Direct password authentication failed while trusted connections worked. A PMR was opened with IBM but no resolution was recorded in the thread.
Auto-generated by DrWatson from the posts below — may be imperfect; read the full thread.
Topics: High Availability & Replication, Connectivity: ODBC / JDBC / .NET, Server Administration, Security, Permissions & Auditing, Java & JDBC Development
IDS 12.10.FC4W1X3 on HP-Unix B.11.31 U ia64 (configured to work in trusted
mode, NO shadowing)
This issue is pertianing to connection with one of the sds nodes
I am facing a very weird issue of connectivity with one of the java
application trying to connect to informix database using correct user id and
password and still getting the below error in online.log
14:45:39 Password Validation for user [ind9appl] failed!
14:45:39 Check for password aging/account lock-out.
14:45:39 listener-thread: err = -952: oserr = 0: errstr =
vikas@prodbcc: User (vikas@prodbcc)'s password is not correct
for the database server.
The Java application log file shows following error
[2015-08-20 14:45:39,652] WARN AdviserConnectionPool:179 - Exception
Occured while getting Connection. You may be need to increase the pool.
org.apache.commons.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot create
PoolableConnectionFactory (Incorrect password or user com.informix.asf.
IfxASFRemoteException: vikas@prodbcc is not known on the database
server.)
With user "vikas" and valid password I am able to login to database server
host and do dbaccess successfully but it does not work with the JDBC string
We even tried writting a small java connection code program but there too it
fails.
String DbUrl =
"jdbc:informix-sqli://200.200.165.165:2000/test:informixserver=prod1;user=vikas;
password=xxxxxxx;";
Even with ODBC connectino from my machine to this server with different user
id's including "informix" user does not work and gives the same error "user
not known on database server"
surprisingly this app when configured to point ot another SDS instance or the
primary instance, the connneciton is successfull.
Checked all the corresponing /etc/hosts, hosts.equiv and even tried .rhosts
entries but nothing seems to be working
Checked the permissions of oninit file and confirmed that the instance was
started with user "informix" only.
Checked with a 6 character password (less than 8) but did not work.
Checked out the following IBM links for similar issue but did not help
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21141697
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21177527
Any more checks or suggesstions can be helpful.

Vikas
Hello.
You didn't mention, but.. what Java driver version are you using ???
Maybe you are using an old version, that might be facing some bug.
The latest version is Informix JDBC 4.10.JC5, check it out.
If you are using a recommended/compatible JDBC driver, you should be guided to
open a PMR in IBM support.
Hope it helps.
Regards.

Hi,
On the database server when I try to do
dbaccess >>
CONNECTION: Connect >>
SELECT DATABASE SERVER >> sds1
USER NAME >> vikas
PASSWORD >> xxxxxx
951: Incorrect password or user vikas@dbserver is not known on the databaseserver
And because I have a trust based connection establised for this user I can
simply enter and query the database by doing "dbaccess sds1" with out any
error.
I am trying all this with user that is valid (unlocked) on the database server
it self.
Have raised a PMR with IBM but no help as of now. Kinda weird and troubling a
lot.
Regards,
Vikas

The problem is solved. It was interesting problem and hence sharing it=20
with you all:
Vikas has a trusted system setup which doesn't maintain /etc/shadow file.=20
For HP, Informix checks if the system is trusted or not using a function=20
iscomsec(). If it returns 1, its a trusted system and informix skip=20
password validation and if it returns 0, informix checks for /etc/shadow=20
file.
iscomsec determines if the system is a trusted system or not by checking=20
the file, /tcb/files/auth/system/default. If the file exists, the system=20
is a trusted system. If the file does not exist, the system is not a=20
trusted system.
On Vikas's system, the /tcb/files/auth directory had 700 root:sys=20
permission and hence even though /tcb/files/auth/system/default file was=20
present, iscomsec was not able to read and was returning 0.
By changing permission of /tcb/files/auth to 771 root:sys and ensuring=20
permission of /tcb/files/auth/system also is same, the problem is fixed.
To know more about iscomsec -=20
