Esa, I don't know the reasons for not being able to use an order by with an update cursor, but you are correct about using a where clause with an index to get around the problem. Using greater than symbol in your where clause on an indexed item will perform the sort, eg: where last_name > "A" would start with all last names starting A and sort them. If you don't wish to get all the rows just add more conditionals, eg: where last_name > "A" and last_name <> "SMITH" ....
