DEFRAG IN UNIX

Thanks for everybody who gave me some help over adding swap in SCO OPEN SERVER, i fixed the problem. I have 7.3 IDS and 4.2 SE (yes, yet) running on SCO and the cooked files SE uses, are (i think) over the entire filesystem and the overall perfomance goes down, so on a periodical basis might bu useful defrag the filesystem. Is there any way to "defrag" a filesystem in UNIX?. In a multiuser environment as UNIX is, continuous wites and deletes leave the disc with holes; i think the only way to workaround is (in maintenance mode of course) 1. Backing up the entire filesystem (with permissions, ownership, sticky bits and so on) 2. Deleting the filesystem 3. Umounting the filesystem 4. Runing fsck over the umounted filesystem (to fix aby error) 5. Mounting the filesystem 6. Restoring the backup 7. Going back to multiuser mode. Has anybody another idea? ===== ______________________________________ Luis Carlos D'az Otero ALCANOS DE COLOMBIA S.A. Hi! First: this is more a Unix question than Informix - try comp.unix.sco.misc for this type of questions, you will get better answers. There was a similar post there a few month ago and no, there is no defrag in Unix and it is not required. If you have large tables in SE you can put them on a separate file system (or disk) with no other activity and stop worrying about disk fragmentation. To improve performance you can periodically just drop and re-create indexes on your most active tables or if you have lots of delete-insert operations, unload the table (sorted), drop, create and load.
