ONCONFIG and AIX
Posted in 2006
A DBA migrating IDS 10 from HP-UX to AIX (LPAR on an i595) saw "KAIO: out of OS resources, errno = 11" in the online log during loads/alters/index builds, and considered disabling KAIO as on HP-UX. Replies pointed to the IFMX_AIXKAIO_NUM_REQ environment variable (one poster set it to 4096 and the message stopped; the original poster's 3500 wasn't enough), and to tuning AIX itself via smitty (smitty chaio, or Devices > Asynchronous I/O > legacy AIO), where the maximum number of AIO requests and servers can be raised. No confirmation of the final outcome is recorded.

Hello All,
I am looking for feedback, comments, etc.
We are currently on IDS 10.FC4 on HP-UX 11
- migrating to IDS 10.FC5 on AIX on an LPAR partition on the i595
I have gotten this message in the log while performing some loads/alter
tables/indexes, etc
in development phase.
"13:33:20 KAIO: out of OS resources, errno = 11, pid = 282828"
I decided to turn off KAIO, which is what we have in our current Prod
OLTP system on the HP's.
Here is my ONCONFIG - thanks!

Look to see if this environment variable could be of any use to you :
IFMX_AIXKAIO_NUM_REQ="yourvalue"
I had that issue and I set it to 4096 and the error msg went away.
your system is probably using the default value if it is not set, you might
need to increase it if you are using KAIO.
This issue can also be resolved at the OS level too.

Thanks for the advice. I had it set to 3500 and still saw the error - i will try 4096 and see what happens. When it was set on HP-UX before we turned it off, we would sometimes see the message and things would still run. But then one time we got a bunch of semaphore errors and it crashed the system. Tom
One other question - your statement "This issue can also be resolved at the OS level too." has me curious. How is it resolved at the OS level? >From what I can tell, AIX does not allow for manual tuning of most of its kernel parameters. We are used to tuning this parameters on HP-UX but are finding out how "un-tunable" AIX is. Tom
