Fuzzy and Full checkpoint duration
Posted in 2007
A DBA on IDS 9.4 on HP-UX wanted fuzzy/full checkpoint durations but couldn't read online.log (mode 660 informix:informix), and onstat -m only shows the last 20 lines. Replies: chmod 664 on online.log (and $ONCONFIG) is safe and needs no engine restart; alternatively run something like 'su informix -c "view online.log"'. Art Kagel noted checkpoint duration is recorded only in the online log (inferable from chkpt begin/end logical log records), not in reserved pages. John Miller added that the then-upcoming Cheetah release exposes syscheckpoint (last 20 checkpoints, with flush/cp times) and sysonlinelog via SQL, and explained dskflush_per_sec shows buffer count when flush time is under a second.

It appears that my question was incorrectly phrased, in relation to fuzzy &
full checkpoint duration. Therefore, did not get any response. Let me try
again by rephasing my question:
OnLine logs have got info. about fuzzy and full checkpoints duration. There is
a permission issue with online log file at our site (permission 660
informix:informix). onstat -m can show only last 20 lines from online logs. My
questions are:
1. How can I find fuzzy & full checkpoint duration since no read permission on
online log file?
2. I am hoping changing permissions on online log file (say 664
informix:informix) is safe and does not require bouncing the engine. Is this
correct ?
Thanks.

chmod 664 is okay for the online.log ... and for the $ONCONFIG file. I do
that myself and it has never presented any issues as far as I can tell.
Take care.

Until Cheetah comes out (it gathers some metrics but I don't know if this is

parse that information to get what you need ... but that would require read
access of the log file.

The checkpoint duration is not recorded anywhere except in the online log. You
can infer it from the chkpt begin and chkpt end records in the logical logs,
but that's it. On the checkpoint reserved pages, pages 2 & 3, only the start
time and the logical log unique id and offset of the check point log record for
the most recent two checkpoints are recorded, but no duration.

You could create a script like this:
su informix -c 'view /usr/informix/online.log'
When you execute it, you would have to type the informix password. This
should be pretty safe since it only executes the one command and view is
read only.

John, I would expect to see the dskflush_per_sec to be calculated as:
n_dirty_buffs / flush_time = 6 / 0.021177158516 = 283.324129413623
Not 6! ??

John, I would expect to see the dskflush_per_sec to be calculated as:
n_dirty_buffs / flush_time =3D 6 / 0.021177158516 =3D 283.324129413623
Not 6! ??

There is allot more information in cheetah about checkpoints. The
most common information is in a table called syscheckpoints which
records information about the last 20 checkpoints.
In addition if you still want to get information out of the online log =

you
now can query sysonlinelog using matches and other SQL functions
to get want you want.
