Link Dbf To Informix
Posted in 2011
Francesco asked whether a driver exists to make an old Windows dBase/DBF application transparently read and write Informix tables instead of its .dbf files. Art Kagel said there is no direct way: the only in-server option would be building a Virtual Table Interface access method backed by library code that can read .dbf files, but he could find no such ready-made libraries. As practical alternatives he suggested the Perl DBD/XBase module or a cheap dBase viewer utility to convert .dbf data to delimited files and load it into real Informix tables, plus a pointer to the IDS 9.3 docs on IBM's InfoCenter. No transparent solution was found.

Hi, There's a way (driver) to attach files to DBF informix table ? I have a old Windows program which writes / reads dbf file. I seek a way to leave intact the old program, and make sure to "connect" the dbf files to the informix tables So that our old program continues to write / read dbf file, when in fact the writing / reading is performed on the Informix database. Thanks for your response, Francesco.
Not directly. You could use the Vitual Table Interface with some library code that can read .dbx files to map the .db file to a table. Go to the Informix InfoCenter ( http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/ifxhelp/v0/index.jsp), expand <+Servers> in the menu panel at the left, click on <IDS 9.x> under that, and you will see a link to the 9.3 docs in the panel at the right. Hmm, I used to see libraries out there for this, but I'm not seeing any. Alternatives: 1. Here's a link to a Perl module that can read .dbf files. Then you could read them in Perl, write out delimited text files instead, and load the files into real Informix tables: http://search.cpan.org/author/JANPAZ/DBD-XBase-0.231/lib/XBase.pm 2. Here's a link to an inexpensive product that can convert .dbf files to delimited format: http://dbase-viewer.scalabium-software.qarchive.org/ Art Art S.
