Dear all,
We are running IDS 9.30.UC2 on Solaris 2.8. So far, perform backup to
/dev/rmt/0 is working fine. But, when we change to backup device to a
file we encountered the above problem.
Below are some of the info copy from our console.
Console>onstat -V
Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.30.UC2
Console>ontape -s
Please enter the level of archive to be performed (0, 1, or 2) 0
Please mount tape 1 on /home/backup_03 and press Return to continue ...
10 percent done.
20 percent done.
30 percent done.
Archive failed - function write to tape failed code -1 errno 27
Program over.
Console>ls -l /home/backup_03
-rwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 2147483647 Apr 19 14:25 /home/backup_03
Console>ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited
data(kbytes) unlimited
stack(kbytes) 8192
coredump(blocks) unlimited
nofiles(descriptors) 256
vmemory(kbytes) unlimited

Is this the limitation of IDS9.30.UC2?
Please help.

Does the /home filesystem support file sizes greater than 2 GB ?
If not, probably you must change or recreate the filesystem (on
HP-UX you can change the filesystem if you can unmount it).
Another workaround: Create a named pipe as backup target and
read from that pipe with a compression tool, e.g.
mknod /home/backup.pipe p
TAPEDEV /home/backup.pipe
gzip -c < /home/backup.pipe > /home/backup.gz &
ontape -s -L 0
Check the restore! It might be necessary to fake a remote restore
(.rhosts) and you will need two telnet sessions:
TAPEDEV <hostname>:/home/backup.pipe
Session 1:
ontape -r
Session 2:
gunzip -c /home/backup.gz > /home/backup.pipe

Hi
In addition to the named pipe workaround that was mentioned, you can al=
so
use symlinks.
Create an empty /home/backup_03 file
Set TAPEDEV to /home/tapedev_link, and have /home/tapedev_link point to=
/home/backup_03
Set TAPESIZE to a value that will calculate to less than 2GB
Perform the Level 0 backup
When it says tape is full, mount next tape, then just create another em=
pty
file (ie. /home/backup_03_a)
Then have /home/tapedev_link point to /home/backup_03_a
Then have ontape continue the backup.
