I think you have to close your database first (ask all your people to exit and stop all apps running on it, then start database as you say. That should work. Again, you'll have to close the database after the start, because that puts a lock on the entire db. Before your start you'll still have to declare the database, i.e. database x It's covered in the manual, but possibly a bit obliquely and not in the context of "What do I do when I delete my log?"
