As Obnoxio points out, luring the employees for their knowledge is not entirely ethical. TTBOMK, IBM doesn't do that, but I wouldn't be privy to that even if they did. However, I think the bigger thing is that Informix may have had patents on some of that, and so this is one way to buy all the patents outright. If you've not heard, IBM is somewhat big on patents, so they're less likely to knowingly infringe on others' patents, especially when it's so cheap to buy them ;->
