New Era...

I know many of you will complain that this sounds like a sales pitch, and to you I say "TOO BAD". I just returned from a 4-day class offered by CDI (Concepts Dynamic, not comp.database.Informix) and am very much impressed. CDI has developed a class library ( in conjunction with Relevant Business Systems and Tecsys ) that does many of the things Informix promises New Era will let you do. We spent most of our time working with the libraries built for your typical maintenance module and it allows you to produce a nice, clean, working, even pretty windows program in about the same time it takes to paint the screen in the window painter (we added half a dozen lines of simple code to make the new libraries fully functional). The new class libraries are known collectively as the Application Framework. We were involved in the New Era beta program and the basic feeling was that we would need to put months of labor into development of a basic framework to make anything we could ever sell. CDI has invested the time and produced something we can all use. The plan is that Informix will eventually distribute this framework with New Era possibly as soon as 1.1. I have also heard rumors that upcoming versions will now include a better editor ( or at least a real editor ) as well as built in revision control. The price isn't going down but at least we will be getting more. As for the need of New Era when we already have all the other visual tools, none of the other tools are everything that New Era is. If you are going to work with a database, use a database tool. If you want to write a little simple query for your boss to run, do it in Excel with an ODBC link. As for the effort of having to buy a C compiler for your windows workstation, I bet you bought one for your UNIX system. CALL soapbox.modeSet(soapboxMode:ExitSoapboxMode) for more info...
